The Southwest Regional Center for Community Education Development was established at Arizona State University in 1968 with the assistance of a Mott Foundation grant secured by Harold Moore. Thomas Mayhew was appointed as the first director. The Center was established to coordinate community school activities among state and local agencies, distribute Mott Foundation monies to appropriate programs and to offer education programs and services within the region.
